Experience collected during designing and construction of various types of floating covers for heat storage ground reservoirs is summarized. Economic calculations proved plastic covers to be generally cheaper than steel ones. On the other hand steel covers opposite to plastic ones can stand very high temperatures in a long time.

Thermo technical tests proved the annual heat losses through a 12100 m"2 cover to be between 500 and 626 MWh/year. Cold-bridge effect between the cover sections and storage reservoir edge are negligible. In phase III of this project the prototypes of these pilot-scale solutions will be tested in full scale.

Water- and vapor- proofing, moisture and water intrusion into insulation, motion of covers due to thermal expansion, mounting time and handling of covers will be tested. (EG).
