Using an Unsteady Panel Method with Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems
The application of Unsteady Panel Methods as an analytical tool in studies of subsonic fluid-structure interactions is considered. An example of a flat rigid plate in a uniform flow is studied with a discrete vortex model. A quasi-steady approximation to the model is derived by assuming that the plate motion is much slower than the transport of vorticity in the wake behind the plate.
The qualitative behaviour described by this analytical model is shown to be comparable with behaviour seen in numerical simulations of the full unsteady model including the influence of the wake.
