A Comparative Study on Fatigue Life Optimization of the Intersection between a Longitudinal and a Webframe

In Proceedings of International Conference on Fatigue of Welded Components and Structures — 1996, pp. 33-40
From

Department of Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering, Technical University of Denmark1

The connection between longitudinals and transverse web frames, is a weak point in the fatigue strength of a ship structure. Moreover it is very expensive to repair fatigue damages in these intersections, and a fatigue analysis for a specific detail was therefore carried out in order to seek to improve the design.

A new improved slot for the longitudinal intersection in the web plate is found on the basis of a shape optimization of the conventional slot. The new slot has an unique shape (tongue form) resulting in a stress relaxation around the slot. Both the conventional and the new slot structure were analyzed by FEM followed by fatigue life calculations and subsequently compared.

The overall expected fatigue life for the shape optimized slot will increase by approximately 12 %. The results were compared with an another study concerning a slot for a T-longitudinal.
