The RTU unit: Possibilities in the use of sampled signals for DA purposes
In the future secondary transformer stations gradual introduction of data acquisition for monitoring and control purposes can be expected. In the major part of the stations a fairly limited amount of data will be collected, but in some vital stations, the data acquisition may end up being rather comprehensive.
It is likely that there will be stations where all voltages, currents, powers, harmonics and distortions are monitored. It is the authors' opinion that such acquisitions will be of the sampling type, collecting the waveshape of the signals, and afterwards performing signal processing on the data in order to calculate for example the RMS value.
This eliminates the use of the well-known but expensive analog converters such as AC to RMS converters or analog power transducers, and it gives greater flexibility in specifying the wanted data. This paper describes some opportunities in the future and advanced secondary substations, and describes a concept developed by DEFU and DTU, which is implemented in DEFU's 10 kV test plant in Odense.
