Equivalence of Stress and Energy Calculations of Mean Stress

Abstract
Calculations of the mean stress in a plastically deformed matrix containing randomly distributed elastic inclusions are considered. The mean stress for an elastically homogeneous material is calculated on the basis of an energy consideration which completely accounts for elastic interactions. The result is shown to be identical to that obtained from a stress calculation.
The possibility of including elastic interactions in the case of elastic inhomogeneity is discussed.
