A model-based approach is demonstrated, to analyze a heat integrated horizontal distillation system for separation of light alcohol mixtures from second-generation biomass. The objective is to develop an engineering tool, based on process systems engineering concepts. This tool is used to analyze and evaluate the proposed separation system to provide guidelines with  respect to specific design and process variables.

The model is simulated and comparative studies for different mixtures containing alcohols are carried out. It is shown that separation of mixtures with low concertation of light alcohol content requires less energy compared to conventional distillation systems.
