Traveling-Wave Tube Amplifier for THz Frequencies
The lack of a compact and powerful terahertz source has been hindering the application of terahertz radiation in many fields. Frequency multipliers can be used in conjunction with an electronic solid-state source to obtain power levels up to around 1 mW. A higher power may be generated with vacuum tubes and gas lasers, but the ones available are too expensive or large for many applications.
This work is related to the European project OPTHER (Optically driven terahertz amplifiers) which aims to realise a compact, powerful and efficient vacuum tube amplifier for the frequency range of 0.3 – 2.0 THz. This amplifier could be then combined with a broad tunable photomixer system to attain a power level of 10 – 100 mW.
