The significance of particle aggregation in an estuarine environment: case studies from the Lister Dyb tidal area

In Oceanographic Literature Review — 1997, Volume 44, Issue 3, pp. 207

The Lister Dyb tidal area is located between the Danish barrier island Romo and the German island Sylt in the northern part of the European Wadden Sea. Investigations concerning the temporal variation of current velocities, suspended sediment concentration, and settling velocities of the suspended matter have been carried out on the tidal flat at Ballum and in the tidal channel Pandertief.

The suspended sediment is seen to flocculate during all the investigated tidal periods. X-ray diffraction analyses showed the bottom sediment of the rivers Vida and Brede A as well as the tidal compartment to be very similar with regard to distribution of clay minerals with montmorillonite being the most abundant.
