Thermodynamics of losses in photovoltaic conversion

This letter presents a thermodynamic analysis of losses in an ideal solar cell. It is shown that the maximum voltage—corresponding to the voltage produced by a hot-carrier solar cell—is equal to the energy of the incident solar photon multiplied by the appropriate Carnot factor. Voltage generated by the usual p-n junction cell is lower on account of entropy generation through kinetic losses, ph...

Thermodynamics of photovoltaic energy conversion

detailed balance methods is also outlined briefly. We show that the Shockley solar cell equation implies different types of losses (reversible and irreversible) in different parts of the I-V characteristic. The application of thermodynamics to photovoltaic energy conversion includes also the open circuit

Practical handbook of photovoltaics: fundamentals and applications

As part of the growing sustainable and renewable energy movement, the design, manufacture and use of photovoltaic devices is increasing in pace and frequency. The Handbook of Photovoltaics will be a 'benchmark' publication for those involved in the design, manufacture and use of these devices

Comment on “Efficiency limits of photovoltaic fluorescent collectors”

This comment shows that the fundamental efficiency limits of fluorescent collectors based on selective reflector which were discussed recently in the paper by Rau et al can be obtained analytically in a closed form by using a method developed in a recently published by Markvart, and can be expressed in terms of a single parameter of the collector: the photon collection efficiency.
