Microplastic particles in sediments from Danish waters

Sediment contents of microplastic particles were studied at several areas in Danish coastal and open waters in the North Sea, Skagerrak, Kattegat, Belt Sea and Baltic Sea from 2012. Isolation of microplastic particles were performed after basic digestion of natural organic matter, before applying

Microplastics: Occurrence, effects and sources of releases to the environment in Denmark

This report contains a review of existing knowledge on issues related to contamination by micro-plastic with a focus on the use and release of micro-plastics in Denmark and the occurrence of micro-plastics in the surrounding waters. Micro-plastic defined as small plastic pieces of 1µm to 5 mm

Microplastics and biogeochemical relationships in sediments from Skagerrak, Kattegat and Baltic Sea

This study is a first attempt in Denmark on assessing the presence of microplastics in our open & coastal waters from Baltic to North Sea. Among the conclusions: - Microplastic particles can be found in sediment in Danish waters and is a potential indicator for MSFD. - Normalisation to %TOC, or the <63μm fraction as a 2nd alternative, will improve spatial assessment. - Further studies are needed to identify the specific plastic polymers, sources and impact of microplastics

Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Microplastics in Water and Mussels Sampled from Cape Town Harbour and Two Oceans Aquarium, South Africa

The aim of this study was to measure the characteristics and risk assessment of microplastics (MPs) in Cape Town Harbour (CTH) and the Two Oceans Aquarium (TOA) in Cape Town, South Africa from 2018 to 2020. Water and mussel MP samples were analyzed at 3 sites in CTH and TOA, respectively
