Chlorine-containing natural compounds in higher plants

From

Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Technical University of Denmark1

More than 130 chlorine-containing compounds have been isolated from higher plants and ferns; about half are polyacetylenes, thiophenes and sesquiterpene lactones from the Asteraceae. A chlorinated chlorophyll may be an important part of photosystem 1. High biological activity is found in 4-chloroindoleacetic acid from pea and in the cancerostatic maytansinoids.

Many compounds are chlorohydrins isolated along with the related epoxides. Some compounds, like gibberellin A6 hydrochloride from bean, are perhaps artefacts.
