Conference paper

A physical analogy to fuzzy clustering

In Eunite 2004: European Symposium on Intelligent Technologies, Hybrid Systems and Their Implementation on Smart Adaptive Sy — 2004, pp. 521-526

This tutorial paper provides an interpretation of the membership assignment in the fuzzy clustering algorithm fuzzy c-means. The membership of a data point to several clusters is shown to be analogous to the gravitational forces between bodies of mass. This provides an alternative way to explain the algorithm to students.

The analogy suggests a possible extension of the fuzzy membership assignment equation.
