Section introduction: Re-evaluating CSCW systems

From

Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Technical University of Denmark1

This chapter describes the re-evaluation of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) systems. It also presents a thorough qualitative evaluation of the use of a highly influential and equally controversial CSCW application—namely, THE COORDINATOR—is presented. Most of the actors merely utilize THE COORDINATOR as an enhanced email system, without the underlying conversation structure.

As opposed to the approach adopted by the designers of THE COORDINATOR with respect to the challenge of designing coordination mechanisms, the objective of the “ConversationBuilder” experiment is to develop a generic framework for open, active, and flexible support for collaboration. A crucial issue in the “ConversationBuilder” experiment is the contention that a computer environment should enable organizations and end users to dynamically adapt the system to their specific needs or preferences.

Dynamic modifications of existing facilities supporting work activities are important for several reasons. As users gain a better understanding of their work, they should be able to modify prescribed routines and procedures to better reflect this understanding..
