Stopping of keV Light Ions in Solid Hydrogen
The stopping of keV light ions in films of solid H2 and D2 was studied by two independent methods: 1.(a) The variation of the positive emission coefficient with target thickness was measured for 1–10 keV/amu hydrogen ions and 2–10 keV D3+-ions incident on targets of solid H2 and D2 deposited on a gold substrate.
From this the ranges of the ions were determined. Values for H in H2 agree very well with existing data for gaseous H2. Only for D3+-ions in solid D2 do results deviate from theory by more than 10%.2.(b) Stopping powers were measured by backscattering through thin films of D2 deposited on a Xe-backing.
This method is applicable only to 4–5 keV H3+-and D3+-ions. Results support the range measurements.
