•Diatom fluxes were documented across the Pacific Sector of the Southern Ocean.•Diatom size tends to decrease to the south of the ACC.•A shift from larger to smaller species throughout the annual bloom was observed.•Large diatoms have the potential to greatly impact C fluxes to the ocean interior.•Small and abundant Fragilariopsis species in the SACCZ are shallow export diatoms.
