This study identifies key requirements for NRENs towards future network architectures that become apparent as users become moremobile and have increased expectations in terms of availability of data. In addition, cost saving requirements call for federated use of, inparticular, the optical spectral resources.

In this work, the key findings from related projects are integrated to provide the building blocks forefficient use and sharing of spectrum. A new network architecture is derived to support exactly the service orchestration and the federated useof resources. It comprises four layers from the heterogeneous multi-technology physical layer up to the service provisioning and orchestration.
