Industrial fires 3. Workshop proceedings
Fires in chemical storages represent a major hazard to people and the environment in the vicinity of industrial plants. Toxic fire effluent may be dispersed into the atmosphere causing harm to people. It is becoming increasingly clear that contaminant plumes may contain a significant proportion of unburnt material, greatly increasing the hazard from pesticide storage.
Additionally, contaminated water used in fighting the fire can be released into the environment. The Commission of the European Communities (CEC) has supported a large amount of research into the consequences and prevention of storage fires over recent years. It is very important to coordinate and disseminate the results in such a way as to maximize its impact.
Three seminars have been organized in cooperation with the CEC, bringing together the different EU-funded projects on industrial fires. This was the third seminar on this topic and was held at Risø National Laboratory, Denmark in September 1996. (EG).
