Process identification is undergoing tremendous developments as computational capabilities improve. Theories are rapidly catching up with the needs of practical applications but practical process identification experiences still reveal significant gaps between theory and practice. This review attempts to highlight the present gaps and challenges.

With this objective, the review treats recent progress in process identification with data gathered in closed loop, and in the tailoring of an entire identification process to a given control objective.
