In this article the theoretical developments and practical implications of research on psychosocial work environment are recognized. It is, however, argued that they do not apply to the working conditions of many modern organisations. On the basis of theoretical discussions traditional understandings are challenged and a revised theoretical framework is outlined.

The integration of an alternative theoretical model for psychological development is suggested and significant nuances and modifications are pointed out, relating to work in conditions of change and complexity.
