Microbial Membrane-supported Catalysts: A Paradigm Shift in Clean energy and Greener production
From materials standpoint, biological cells can be regarded as nanomaterial factories, perfected by evolution, to execute seemingly complex functions in a seamless energy efficient manner. This article discusses the mechanistic principles of metal-supported microbial catalyst and compare it to the industrial benchmark parameters within the framework of conventional catalysis.
This article discusses incorporation of microbial membrane towards direct augmentation in heterogeneous catalysis and clean energy applications. Efforts have been made to connect multidisciplinary fundamentals with relevant examples, highlightening potential opportunities, and providing a clear overview for a synergistic developmental plan in the near future.
Clearly, EBMs will bring in a paradigm shift for both developing and developed economies, allowing each to capitalize on pre-existing tools of bio-based production, fermentation technology and synthetic biology, towards one-step high-value product generation with lower carbon footprint.
