The paper consider the use of prolate spheroidal wave functions as basic orthogonal functions in the wave description in the time domain first order reliability method applied to wave response statistics in stationary sea states. In-tact stability of a ship in beam sea is considered as an example and the results for the most probable response and the associated statistics are evaluated and com-pared to the usual procedure using trigonometric functions.
