Worn crossing noses extracted from the track were studied through extensive metallographic examinations, including optical microscopy and X-ray tomog-raphy used for three-dimensional mapping of fatigue crack networks within the S&C nose. The gradient in the residual strain/stress profile from the run-ning surface originating from the rail wheel contact was analyzed using syn-chrotron as well as laboratory X-ray diffraction
