PCM Cold Storage for Flexible Room Cooling
To increase the operation flexibility of chillers for room cooling via water to air heat exchangers, two different cold storages are in development – each with PCM as storage material with high storage density from 12–18 °C. For secure server room cooling a pilot storage containing 153 kg salt hydrate utilizing a water/PCM heat exchanger was tested.
An energy content of 28 MJ was obtained from 11–23 °C. In another pilot setup with 6.5 liter paraffin, heat transfer in direct contact with water was studied. An average thermal power of ~300 W was measured during PCM solidification. This approach was found attractive for solar cooling because it is potentially inexpensive.
Pilot storages will be upscaled in 2021/2022. Focus on further testing will be on cyclic stability.
