Extreme wind mapping over the North Sea
Atlases of the 50-year wind over the North Sea have been created for two heights, 10 m and 100 m. The atlases have also been made for a range of temporal resolutions, from the original time resolution of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis of 6 hours to 1 hour and further to 10 min. Two methods were used for producing the atlases, one through statistical downscaling using the coarse resolution global reanalysis data with the spectral correction method, one through dynamical downscaling using mesoscale modeling.
In some results, the two methods are blended. Issues of uncertainties related to different data and different methods were discussed. These results can be compared to earlier studies for this area from yet other different data sources and methods. According to the data validation based on very limited number of sites and measurements, the 50-year winds provided in this study are all quite acceptable.
Though, we expect more measurements to come to make a better data validation in the future.
