Highlights► New approach for quanitative temperature determinations in palaeoclimate research is presented. ► It is based on Th measurements of previously monophase fluid inclusions in stalagmites. ► Specific demands on selection, handling and preparation of the stalagmites are identified. ► Correction is applied to Th to compensate for the effect of surface tension. ► The accuracy of the new thermometer is expected to be better than ±0.5°C.
