Oxygen supply for enzyme-mediated biooxidations

Biocatalytic reaction methods, using oxygen-dependent enzymes (such as oxidases and oxygenases), provide an interesting alternative to conventional methods of oxidation in organic synthesis. The mild conditions, combined with the use of molecular oxygen, as well as highly selective catalysis enables excellent green catalytic oxidation to produce valuable targets.

However the design of a suitable process, scale-up and implementation of such technology in industry is frequently without precedent. In an attempt to address these issues, this presentation will outline the major implications of using oxygen as a substrate. Particular focus will be placed on methods of oxygen supply as well as the implications for enzyme kinetics and stability.

Methods for the characterization of oxygen-dependent enzymes, including kinetics will also be outlined. The presentation will be illustrated by examples from my laboratory.
