ISO14000 as an EMS can be followed as a travelling standard that has to be adapted and domesticated in the local context, where it is applied. By following the processes of this adaptation and how it changes the coherence between the companies, the regulators and other stakeholders the role of the standard is identified.

The article is based on a number of case-studies of implementation of EMS in Thai companies.
