The scientific payload onboard the Large Observatory For x-ray Timing mission (LOFT, see presentation by P. Ray et al. at this meeting) is composed of two instruments, the Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m2 effective area in the primary energy range 2-30 keV, 1-deg collimated field of view) and the Wide Field Monitor (WFM, arcmin imaging over a 4-steradian field of view in the primary energy range 2-50 keV).

In this paper we present the design solutions for the two experiments, together with their characteristics and anticipated scientific performance.
