Lithium-Oxygen Batteries: At a Crossroads?

In this current opinion, we critically review and discuss some of the most important recent findings in the field of rechargeable lithium-oxygen batteries. We discuss recent discoveries like the evolution of reactive singlet oxygen and the use of organic additives to bypass reactive LiO2 reaction intermediates, and their possible implications on the potential for commercialization of lithium-oxygen batteries.

Finally, we perform a critical assessment of lithium-superoxide batteries and the reversibility of lithium-hydroxide batteries.
