Aspects of deformation of metal matrix composites
The microstructural parameters, and the strength and deformation characteristics of metal matrix composites are presented, with special reference to the maximum attainable strength under mechanical and thermal loadings. The deformation at low temperature is related to the stress-strain curve, internal stresses, dislocation interaction with inclusions and work hardening.
The deformation at high temperature is described on the basis of models for creep, involving both short fibres and long fibres. The relaxation of the maximum strength attainable at a given deformation can proceed by various relaxation mechanisms such as diffusion, dislocation movement and fracture. The effect of such relaxation on the strength level will be described.
