Content accessibility of Web documents: Overview of concepts and needed standards

From

Risø National Laboratory for Sustainable Energy, Technical University of Denmark1

The concept of Web accessibility refers to a combined set of measures, namely, how easily and how efficiently different types of users may make use of a given service. While some recommendations for accessibility are focusing on people with various specific disabilities, this document seeks to broaden the scope to any type of user and any type of use case.

The document provides an introduction to some required concepts and technical standards for designing accessible Web sites. A brief review of the legal requirements in a few countries for Web accessibility complements the recommendations. Finally, the document describes some limitations of current Web accessibility guidelines and outlines some future challenges for research in this area.
