The severity of solar cell cracks is most often evaluated qualitatively, by assigning them to one of several categories. In this work we propose a machine analysis friendly metric for evaluating the severity of solar cell cracks from electroluminescence (EL) images. The metric is derived from the EL intensity versus camera sensor exposure time characteristic of the active solar cell regions, relative to that of non-radiative regions of the EL image.

Thereafter an image segmentation method is used to determine the area and position of cracks above a certain severity level.
