The Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations are applied to model the migration test. A detailed analysis of the equations is presented and the effects of a number of common, simplifying assumptions are quantified. In addition, closed-form solutions for the effective chloride diffusivity based on the full PNP equations are derived, a number of experiments are analyzed in detail, and a new, truly accelerated migration test is proposed.

Finally, we present a finite element procedure for numerical solution of the PNP equations.
