Evaluation of restoration mechanisms for future services using Carrier Ethernet

In this paper, we evaluate and classify future service according to their requirements for delay, loss and bandwidth. The most demanding services include IPTV in different forms, hence IPTV is used as a representative for future services. Carrier Ethernet technologies are introduced with special focus on its OAM functionalities, and it is evaluated how IPTV performs in case of link failures on a Carrier Ethernet implementation.

It is concluded that OAM update times of 10 ms is required to provide acceptable restoration performance in case of errors.
