Chaotic intermittency between soliton dynamic states has been found in a perturbed sine-Gordon system in the absence of an external ac driving term. The system is a model of a long Josephson oscillator with constant loss and bias current in an external magnetic field. The results predict the existence of a current step between the first two Fiske steps in the current-voltage characteristic.

A simple probability model demonstrates an asymmetry in the statistical nature of the switching in the two directions.
