This paper deals with the effects of I-shaped cores in an outer-rotor transverse flux permanent magnet generator. Performance characteristics of a typical outer-rotor transverse flux permanent magnet generator are obtained in two cases; with and without I-shaped cores. The results show that although using I-shaped cores can increase the output power to weight ratio and the power factor, the cogging torque as well as output harmonics increase.

Moreover, construction with I-shaped cores is complicated because of the forces exerted on these during operation. The analysis in this paper presents the advantages and disadvantage of using I-shaped cores and emphasizes the necessity of performing a tradeoff study between using and not using I-shaped cores in practical transverse flux permanent magnet generators.
