Boron nitride coatings on high-surface area MgAl2O4 and Al2O3 have been synthesized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy and by X-ray powder diffraction. The metal oxide templates were coated with boron nitride using a simple nitridation in a flow of ammonia starting from ammonium borate adsorbed on MgAl2O4 or gamma-Al2O3.

This procedure resulted in the formation of a turbostratic boron nitride film with a thickness of a few individual BN layers.
