Switching between bistable states in a discrete nonlinear model with long-range dispersion

In the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with long-range dispersion, we propose a general mechanism for obtaining a controlled switching between bistable localized excitations. We show that the application of a spatially symmetric kick leads to the excitation of an internal breathing mode and that switching between narrow, pinned states and broad, mobile states with only small radiative losses occurs when the kick strength exceeds a threshold value.

This mechanism could be important for controlling energy storage and transport in molecular systems.
