Strategies for Research, Education, and Innovation, A University's Considerations

It is argued that the building and construction sector will maintain and even increase its economic and societal importance. In spite of this the private R&D effort in the sector is relatively modest, which in turn makes public research more important. The responds of the Department of Civil Engineering (BYG•DTU) at The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) to this challenge are described: The Department has been reorganised and a new strategy has been adopted.

The strategy was developed in collaboration with industry partners. The Strategy focuses on a) analysis and design of safe and economic constructions, b) materials and buildings with better indoor climate, and c) sustainable building with minimal lifetime resource consumption. BYG•DTU’s mission includes Research, Education and Innovation.

Within Research the following focus areas are chosen: a) Construction design and management, b) Structural engineering, c) Geotechnology, d) Building materials, and e) Building physics and installations. All research is done in research groups with international network and industry contacts. Education follows the Bologna Declaration, and it is undergoing changes in response to industry and society demands.

A revision in dialogue with industry and employers of taught competencies is ongoing. Innovation includes patenting and collaboration projects with industry, thus IPR management becomes increasingly important. The organisation and management structure of DTU has undergone radical changes. The effect is a stronger focus on the key products: Research, Education and Innovation.

Finally the academic evaluation criteria, e.g. the peer review process are discussed. It is argued that supplementary criteria based on references documenting practical results should be considered.
