Fundamental Metallurgy of Solidification
The text takes the reader through some fundamental aspects of solidification, with focus on understanding the basic physics that govern solidification in casting and welding. It is described how the first solid is formed and which factors affect nucleation. It is described how crystals grow from the nucleus and under which conditions classical types of microstructures form, such as dendrites, cells and eutectic.
Concepts such as solute redistribution and segregation are explained. And it is discussed how they influence the microstructure of the metals. Cases are used to illustrate how the microstructures of solidified metals are formed.
