Electric railway lines are typically single-phase systems connected to two phases of the power grid. The large and rapid power drawn during the acceleration of the trains can cause voltage and power unbalance in the power system. In order to counteract such unbalance, the installation of a flywheel in the proximity of the traction transformer is proposed.

In this paper, a peak shaving control strategy for the power electronic converter accessing energy from the flywheel is presented. Such strategy is based on the synchronization techniques used for single-phase systems, including phase-locked loops and resonant controllers. The paper demonstrates with simulation results satisfactory performance of the controller, which is able to track the traction load and maintain the grid current under a predefined threshold level.
