Integrating a SOFC Plant with a Steam Turbine Plant
A Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is integrated with a Steam Turbine (ST) cycle. Different hybrid configurations are studied. The fuel for the plants is assumed to be natural gas (NG). Since the NG cannot be sent to the anode side of the SOFC directly, a desulfurization reactor is used to remove the sulfur content in the NG and afterwards a pre-reformer break down the heavier hydrocarbons.
Both ASR (Adiabatic Steam Reformer) and CPO (Catalytic Partial Oxidation) fuel reformer reactors are considered in this study. The gases from the SOFC stacks enter into a burner to burn the rest of the fuel. The off-gases after the burner are now used to generate steam in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG).
The generated steam is expanded in a ST to produce additional power. Different systems layouts are considered. Cyclic efficiencies up to 67% are achieved which is considerably higher than the conventional combined cycles (CC).
